Daitya(s)
In Vedic myth the Titans who fought against the gods. They were the sons of Diti. It is told that at the Churning of the Ocean they endeavoured to seize the ambrosia of the gods but were defeated and fled to Patala. In reality they appear to have been the culture heroes of the races who were defeated by the Vedic invaders in their conquest of India. The descriptions of fights would therefore have been related to actual battles. They are one of the tribes of the Asuras, who were defeated by Indra. Haya-Griva, the villain of an early Deluge legend, was a Daitya, as was also Hiranyaksha.
